Battle of Blood River

(1798 — 1853)

The battle of Blood River was a very important battle that the Voortrekker (pioneers) fought against the Zulu troops led by king Dingane.

In this period the Voortrekkers, ancestors of the Boers, were heading northeast and along the way they found several African tribes. One of those were the Zulu. The Voortrekker leader Piet Retief and the Zulu King Dingane signed a deal for establishment of a Voortrekker settlement in uMgungundlovu where is now KwaZulu Natal. However two days after in a cerimony in Dingane’s royal residence Piet Retief was killed being clubbed to death as well several of his men. After that Dingane ordered an attack to various Voortrekkers encampments at night killing 500 men, women and children. The most famous attack was in Blaukraans, which was named the Weenen massacre. Andries Pretorius was named as sucessor of Piet Retief. Pretorius looked to revenge the death of Retief by killed king Dingane. Pretorius had the collaboration of Prince Mpande and 17000 of his followers because Dingane wanted to kill Mpande. The Voortrekkers came in position in the following days. On 15 December the Trekker wagons crossed the Buffalo River. Pretorius built a fortified ox-Wagon Laager on terrain of his own choosing, in the hope that general Ndela would attack it as at Veglaer. On 16 of December the battle begin. The difference in numbers was enormous. Pretorius counted with 464 soldiers and 200 servents. In comparison the Zulu troops were compous by between 15000 to 21000 men but according to Pretorius scribe and secretary, Jan Gerritze Bantjes, the Zulu warriors were over 30000. The Zulu troops attack first but their charge was mown down by the single-shot Voortrekker muskets. Due to the power of their firearms, their ox-wagons in a laager formation and some brilliant tactics the Voortrekkers fought off the Zulu. After just three hours the Voortrekkers killed over 3000 Zulus and their had just 3 wounded men, with Pretorius being one of them. The Zulu soldiers withdreaw and crossed the river that was now red because of the death Zulu’s soldiers blood. Because of the numerical disproportion many Boer-Afrikaners credit this victory to God and it was a sign that God wanted to Boer-Afrikaners to be independent.

After the battle Prince Mpande joined in an alliance with Pretorius and the Zulu began a civil war. In the Battle of Maqongqe the forces of Mpande helped by the Voortrekkers inflicted a severe defeat to Dingane’s troops. Dingane’s soldiers which were not killed fled from the battlesite leaving Dingane with no army. Mapnde was proclamed the new Zulu king and Dingane was killed after fleeing to Swaziland. The Voortrekkers continued to colaborate with Mpande and they agreed that the Tugela river should be the border between Zululand and the recently-founded Republic of Natalia. However this republic was short-lived because in 1843 the republic was conquered by Britain. Most of the Voortrekkers trekked to North and back to West founding then the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (Transvaal) and the Oranje Vrijstaat. Andries Pretorius helped to found the ZAR (Transvaal) which happen in 1857 by his son Marthinus Wessel Pretorius.

A memorial was built to honour the victory of the Voortrekkers that was decisive to the establishment of the two Boer republics. The Ncome monument is on the other side of the river and honours the Zulu warriors that died in this battle. The Voortrekker monument remembering the history of the Voortrekkers was built in Pretoria in 1949.This day is remember as the Day of the Vow or Geloftedag in afrikaans, a religious public holiday in South Africa, but since the end of Apartheid the name was change to Day of the Reconciliation.

2014 elections in Free State

The results of the 2014 national elections in the Free State were the following:

• ANC 69.71% -2.19%
• DA 16.24% 4.14%
• EFF 7.89% – – –
• VF Plus 1.92% 0.31%
• COPE 1.41% -9.70%

The ANC won again the elections with 69,71%of the votes and had a negative change of -2,19%. As in almost all the south african provinces the DA had a increase in the votes in this case 4,14% in relation to the 2009 elections. The EFF had a good result here, bad in the Boer-Afrikaner perspective, of 7,89% which might be explained by the large percentage of blacks in this region, 87,6%. The VF Plus had the best national result in the Free State province with 1,92% and a positive change of 0,31% which is pretty good. This result might be explained by the fact the despite the region has only 8,7% whites, almost all of those are Boer-Afrikaners and some of them are Boers (live in rural areas) and face a wave of crime of racist blacks, even more than in the urban areas. The COPE had an enormous decrease as in other provinces like Western Cape and Northern Cape.

Provincial elections in Bloemfontein

The results of the 2014 provincial elections in the Manguang Local Municipality where is located Bloemfontein and it’s suburbs were the following:

ANC 64.44% 0.00%
• DA 20.87% – – –
• EFF 8.59% – – –
• VF Plus 2.38% – – –
• COPE 1.74% – – –

As in the all province the ANC won the elections but here with a smaller result of 64,44%. By opposition the DA get 20,87% in the provincial elections in Bloemfontein better than in the region. This might be explained by the fact that Bloemfontein has much bigger percentage of whites and coloureds than the Free State province. The EFF had 8,59% due to the large number of poor blacks mainly in the suburbs around Bloemfontein. The VF Plus had 2,38% the biggest provincial result in any big city. The fact the the city has a big number of whites is an influent reason for that and is good for the party. Because this municipality is new we cannot make a comparison with the previous elections.

Provincial elections in Welkom

The results of the 2014 provincial elections in Matjhabeng municipality, where is located Welkom, where the following:

ANC 67.17% -2.34%
• DA 17.71% 3.79%
• EFF 9.77% – – –
• COPE 1.85% -11.70%
• VF Plus 1.55% 0.59%

The ANC won again the elections in this municipality by a large margin. Even with a decrease of -2,34% in the votes we cannot understand how in a municipality that suffer a widespread corruption by the ANC, with 2 billion rande missing, the ANC still won easily. We can only conclude that many people vote in the ANC only because of Mandela and his fight against Apartheid and not because of the work and actions of it’s current politicians. The DA came in second with a positive change of 3,79% but far from the ANC. The EFF of Mandela get 9,77% which could be attribute to the fact that this has 87,7% of blacks many of them poor. The COPE came in fourth with 1,85% and the VF Plus get 1,55% of the votes with a positive change of 0,59% which is defenitly good for a municipality that has only 9,6% of whites.

2014 elections in the Northern Cape province

The results of the 2014 national elections in the Northern Cape province were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009
ANC 63.88% 2.78%
DA 23.36% 10.28%
EFF 5.06% – – –
COPE 3.31% -12.63%
VF Plus 1.32% 0.12%

The ANC won again the elections in this province and it increases the votes by 2,78%. It was the province in which the party increased more it’s votes but it was not significant. The DA had a very strong election in the Northern Cape with a positive change of 10,28% in the votes, becoming now the second major party in this region. The EFF has 5,06% for it’s first elections in this region and the COPE was the major defeat of these elections with a negative decrease of -12,63% in the votes having only a fraction of the ones it had in 2009 elections. The VF Plus had a result of 1,32% with a positive increase of 0,12% in the votes.

The results of the 2014 provincial elections in the Sol Plaatje municipality, where it’s located Kimberley, were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009
ANC 61.31% -0.61%
• DA 29.25% 12.92%
• EFF 4.76% – – –
COPE 1.92% -13.51%
• VF Plus 0.75% -0.34%

The ANC won the provincial election in Sol Plaatje municipality with a result of 61,31% and a negative change of -0,61%. The DA had a very good result with a positive change of 12,92%. The party increased the votation in almost every big city in the country and it is a bigger opositor to the ANC at every new election. The EFF get 4,76%, weak for a municipality with so many blacks, good in the Boer-Afrikaner perspective. The COPE had an enormous decrease even bigger than in the province which happened because the party don’t fulfill the expectations of the 2009 voters. The VF Plus had a votation of 0,75% and a negative change of -0,34% which is not positive but somehow normal because this municipality have few Boer-Afrikaners.

The results of the 2014 provincial elections in Orania community were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

• VF Plus 83.74% -6.49%
• DA 11.79% 4.76%
• ACDP 3.25% 2.47%
• EFF 0.81% – – –
• ANC 0.41% -0.37%

The VF Plus won again the elections, both the national and the provincial, in Orania. However in both cases it happen a significant decrease in the votes of the party. Maybe some of the Orania inhabitants feel that the vote in the VF Plus is not enough to change the course of South African situation. The DA had a positive change of 4,76% in the votes which is due to the helpful vote because some Boer-Afrikaners feel that vote in the DA is the best way to fight the ANC. The ACDP, an ultra-conservative religious party, also had a big increase in the votes of 2,47%. For us is worrying to see that even in the whites-only Orania the ANC and the EFF had a minority of votes. However we want to believe that this people vote in those parties to accelerate the revolutionary process and the attacks against whites to strong Orania and to make more possible a future Volkstaat. The number of votants also decreasea bit, of 231 in 2009 to 206 in 2014 which may be a sign of a lack of good proposals for the Orania inhabitants.

South African general elections in North-West province

The results of the national elections in the North West province were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

ANC 67.79% -6.05%

  •  DA 12.59% 3.89%
  •  EFF 12.53%  – – –
  •  VF Plus 1.61% 0.17%
  •  UDM 0.96% 0.44%

The ANC won with a big margin the elections in this region but as in almost all the country the votation decreased in this case by -6,05% which is very significant. The DA get the second place with just 12,59% but with a positive change of 3,89% similar to what happen in other parts of the country. The EFF get the biggest result in this province, only 0,06% behind the DA. This is worrying in the Boer-Afrikaner perspective and shows that the EFF propaganda can be effective among poor blacks specially the younger generations. The VF Plus had it’s second best result in North West with a positive change of 0,17% probably because this region albeit don’t having many whites has many boers and those are who are suffering more with the racist blacks attacks.

The results of the provincial elections in the Rustenburg city were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

 ANC 56.57% -15.75%

  •  EFF 21.33%  – – –
  •  DA 13.29% 2.45%
  •  UDM 3.45% 2.17%
  •  COPE 1.55% -6.29%
  •  VF Plus 1.14% -0.03%

The ANC won the provincial elections in Rustenburg but had a sharp decrease in the votes with a negative change of -15,75%. Part of those -15.75% ex-ANC votes went to the EFF that get an enormus result of 21,33%. Even considering the fact that in the Rustenburg suburbs live many poor blacks specially in the mining sector this is a really worrying result that should make us think about the danger of the EFF. The DA came in third with just 13,29% but as in almost all the country it had a positive change, in this case 2,45%. The center-left UDM get 3,45% of the votes with a positive change of 2,17%. The VF Plus was sixth with a negative decrease of  0,03% which is normal because the best result of the VF Plus was in rural areas and not in large cities.

2014 national elections in Mpumalanga

The results of the national elections in the Mpumalanga province were the following:

 ANC 78.80% -7.01%

  •  DA 10.04% 2.44%
  •  EFF 6.15%  – – –
  •  BRA 0.88%  – – –
  •  VF Plus 0.85% 0.02%

The ANC won again easily the elections in this province. However is important to notice that the votes in the party had a negative change of -7,01% which shows that even in one of the traditional bastions of the ANC the party is losing a lot of votes. The DA increased is votes by 2,44% and is now over 10%. The EFF had 6,15% of the votes in Mpumalanga which is around the average of it get in the country. Besides, the VF Plus had  positive change of 0,02% to 0,85% which is a bit below the national average but is explained by the fact that this region has not many Boer-Afrikaners.

The result of the provincial election on Nelspruit (Mbombela) wer the following:

 ANC 81.99% -5.98%

  •  DA 11.22% 3.44%
  •  EFF 4.93%  – – –
  •  VF Plus 0.58% -0.01%

Again the ANC won, with a similar result as in the province but again with a negative change in this case of -5,98%. The DA came in second here with a result of 11,22% and with a big positive change of 3,44%. This tendency is similar to wat happen in other parts of the country. The EFF result is low here but might be explain because blacks in city live generally better than  out of it. The VF Plus had a low result here but is due to the fact that the suburbs (Mbombela) were also considered and not only Nelspruit city, which decrease the percentage of Boer-Afrikaners.

2014 elections in Western Cape

The results of the 2014 national elections in the Western Cape were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

  • DA 57.26% 8.48%
  •  ANC 34.00% 1.14%
  •  EFF 2.32%
  •  ACDP 1.17% -0.45%
  •  VF Plus 1.07% 0.21%
  •  COPE 0.64% -8.42%

We can see that the DA won again the elections reforcing is victory of 48,78% in 2009 to 57,26% in 2014. The ANC increased marginally it’s result but to difference to the DA is now much bigger than it was in 2009. The EFF get a small result here which isn’t surprising and the VF Plus had a positive change of 0,21% which is pretty good in a region in which most of the Boer-Afrikaners don’t have the same problems that Boer-Afrikaners have in other regions of the country. The COPE had a great decrease in his votes because don’t fulfill the hopes of it’s 2009 voters.

The results of the 2014 provincial elections in Cape Town (Kaapstad) were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

  •  DA 59.31% 8.39%
  •  ANC 32.41% -0.35%
  •  EFF 2.72%  – – –
  •  ACDP 1.26% -0.48%
  •  VF Plus 0.65% 0.10%

In a similar way that happen in the rest of the province the DA won again the elections in Cape Town increasing the result of 50,92% to 59,31%. The ANC result was almost the same as it was in 2009. The EFF get a small result in it’s first elections in Cape Town which is normal because Cape Town is a city with a majority of coloured people and the poverty rates are lower than in other parts of the country. The VF Plus increased is result by 0,1% but is a small result that happens because of the lower crime rates that Cape Town has comparing to other parts of country.

2014 elections in the Gauteng province

The results of the provincial elections in the Gauteng province were the following:

PARTY  SEATS %VOTE

  •  ANC 40 53.59%
  •  DA  23 30.78%
  •  EFF 8 10.30%
  •  VF Plus 1 1.20%
  •  IFP 1 0.78%
  •  ACDP 0 0.62%

The ANC won again the elections in this province with the DA in second place but the difference shortened because the ANC had a negative change of -9,84% of the votes and the DA increased is votes by 7,25% which shows that in this region the ANC is losing a lot of ground to the DA despite still being, by a large margin, the major party. In it’s first elections the EFF get 10,3% which is worrying but might be explained by the large poverty in this region which is responsibility of the ANC. The VF Plus came in fourth place with a negative change of -0,11% but with a better result than in the overall country.

City of Johannsburg

The results of the provincial elections in the Johannsburg city were the following:

PARTY 2014 RESULTS PTS CHANGE FROM 2009

     ANC 53.63% -9.52%

  •  DA 29.76% 8.92%
  •  EFF 10.15%  – – –
  • IFP 1.32% -1.01%
  • UDM 0.64% 0.21%
  •  VF Plus 0.44% -0.03%

In the city of Johannsburg the change of votes were similar to what happened in the Gauteng province with the ANC losing a lot of votes, -9,52% and DA gaining votes, 8,92%. This might be a sign that the people is starting to understand all the bad things that the ANC do to South Africa and that the DA might be a better solution to the country. The VF Plus had a small result here, 0,44%, which is explained by the fact that this city has few Boer-Afrikaners.

City of Pretoria

The results of the provincial elections in the Tshwane metro, where is located Pretoria, were the following:

     ANC 50.96% -10.11%

  •  DA 31.32% 6.42%
  • EFF 11.41%  – – –
  •  VF Plus 2.52% -0.38%
  •  ACDP 0.83% -0.28%

In the Tshwane metro the trend was similar to the one seen in the Gauteng Province and in Johannsburg. The ANC still won but lost, -10,11% of the votes, and the DA gain, 6,42% of the votes which gives a reduction of more than 16% of the margin between the two parties, which is pretty significant. The EFF of Julius Malema had again a big result of 11,41% and the VF Plus had 2,52% of the votes which is good but 0,28% inferior to the result of the last elections.
